Manitoba Moose News Release
Winnipeg, March 9, 2006 - Today, MTS, True North Sports & Entertainment, and the Manitoba Moose are proud to announce six-time Olympic speed skating medalist and Winnipeg native Cindy Klassen will be honoured prior to the game between the Manitoba Moose and Toronto Marlies on Tuesday, March 28th.
Klassen, 26, recently became Canada's most decorated Olympic athlete ever when she captured five medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Klassen won a gold medal, two silvers, and two bronze medals. These medal wins, in addition to the bronze medal she won at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, have earned her the title of this country's greatest Olympian. Upon her return from Turin, Klassen followed up her Olympic performance by capturing a World Cup title this past weekend in the Netherlands.
"With her unprecedented success, Cindy Klassen has left an enduring mark on Canadian sports history, and I know Manitobans are anxious to show her first hand how proud they are," said MTS Allstream CEO Pierre Blouin. "We at MTS are thrilled to have Cindy on our team, and we can't wait to join everyone in welcoming her home at the MTS Centre on March 28th."
"We are very honoured Cindy has agreed to join us at the MTS Centre on March 28th," said Jim Ludlow, President & CEO of True North Sports & Entertainment. "As a hometown product, she has filled the city of Winnipeg with tremendous pride, not only with her incredible success in Turin, but also with the gracious modesty which she has displayed in handling her success."
"I can't wait to see my hometown again, and I am thrilled to have the chance to see the crowd at the MTS Centre," said Cindy Klassen. "The support and encouragement I have received have been overwhelming, and I look forward to the opportunity to personally share with everyone just how much it has meant."
Klassen will be honoured by provincial government representatives, along with Mayor Sam Katz, MTS Allstream CEO Pierre Blouin, and True North President & CEO Jim Ludlow prior to the game against the Marlies on March 28th. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
