Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs suffered their worst loss of the season Wednesday night, falling 15-2 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs fell behind early and couldn't get anything going offensively, managing just two ninth inning runs.
With the score 0-0 in the second, Wisconsin used some two-out magic to get ahead. With two outs and nobody on base, Kuo Hui Lo singled and Alex Gary was hit by a pitch. Jeff Flaig came up and poked a ground ball down the first base line into right field to score both Lo and Gary and give the Timber Rattlers a 2-0 early lead.
The Timber Rattlers added three more in the third. Robby Hudson doubled and moved to third on a groundout by Mike Saunders. Luis Valbuena walked and stole second. With two outs and two on, Johan Limonta hit an inside-the-park home run to center field. Limonta was originally sent back to second base after the ball appeared to be stuck in the centerfield wall, but later that call was overruled and Limonta was awarded home plate.
Wisconsin tacked on three more in the fourth with run-scoring doubles by Travis Scott and Luis Valbuena and a RBI groundout by Adam Moore. The Timber Rattlers tallied single runs in the sixth and seventh added five more in the ninth inning to make it a 15-0 ballgame.
Peoria finally got on the board in the ninth. Yusuf Carter delivered a run-scoring single and Kyle Reynolds pitched in with an RBI groundout as the Chiefs avoided the shutout.
Starter Todd Blackford allowed eight runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. Jesse Estrada and Roger Evenson came on in relief and combined to give up two runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. Jeff Teasley allowed five runs in 2/3 innings and Scott Koerber came in to get the last out in the ninth. Wisconsin starter David Asher, making his first start of the year after several relief appearances, threw five shutout innings allowing just two hits in picking up his first win of the season.
