Geneva, IL (July 12, 2006) The Burlington Bees (9-11, 44-43) extended their winning streak to five with a 6-1 victory over the Kane County Cougars (11-9, 51-38) at Elfstrom Stadium tonight. The Bees have won five straight games overall and three straight against the Cougars. The Bees lead the season series 5-3.

The Bees jumped out with two quick runs against Cougars' starter Ron Madej (2-3) in the first. Jose Duarte led off the game with a double and went to third on a base hit by Josh Johnson. Mario Lisson hit a line drive off of Madej on the mound for an infield single that brought in Duarte for the first run and Miguel Vega singled into left to plate Johnson. Madej came out after 4.1 innings with a groin injury that is reportedly unrelated to getting hit with Lisson's liner. He allowe five hits and four walks and got the loss. Jeff Gray finished the fifth and struck out two in the sixth before Joe Newby took over on the mound. Newby gave up a bad hop single to Jeff Howell in the sixth that extended Howell's hitting streak to eight, but didn't give up any runs until the seventh.

Jeremy Jirschele led off the seventh with a single, but was forced at second as Chris McConnell reached on a fielder's choice. Valentino Arce moved McConnell to third with a base hit to right on a hit and run. Duarte then hit a bouncer up the middle that went off the glove of shortstop Justin Sellers as he was standing right next to the bag at second. The error allowed Arce to get to second. Duarte reached on a fielder's choice and got an RBI as McConnell scored to make it 3-0. Johnson then lined a triple down the right field line to drive in both runners for a 5-0 lead and Lisson ripped a single to center to drive in Johnson for his second RBI. After a popout and another single by Howell, Newby gave way tove way to Bob Semerano who finished the seventh and worked a scoreless eighth. Joel Posey pitched a perfect ninth to finish it off as the Cougars went through five pitchers in the game.

Bees' starter Erik Cordier (1-1) earned his first Midwest League win with five scoreless innings, but had to get out of trouble a couple of times early on. He walked three in the bottom of the first, but two came with two outs and he got out of the jam. In the bottom of the second, the Cougars had runners on second and third with no outs, but Cordier struck out Toddric Johnson, got Sellers on a comebacker, and ended the inning by getting Isaac Omura to flyout and stranded the runners. He retired the final seven batters he faced and struck out two.

The Cougars scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh inning against Chris Hayes in his second inning of relief. With two outs, Omura grounded a double just inside the bag at third and scored when Jeff Baisley fisted a double down the right field line. Cody Harkcom replaced Hayes in the eighth and allowed one hit in the final two innings to finish off the win.
