Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
July 12, 2006 - Mark Trumbo's towering 2 run home run (11) in the seventh inning provided the added cushion the Kernels needed as they improved to 12-8 in the second half with a 6-2 win over the Clinton LumberKings (5-15).
A Mercy Medical Center night crowd of 4,363 saw the Kernels take an early 2-0 as Brad Coon lead off with a triple to the left-center gap and then scoring on a Larry Infante double to right field. Infante scored on a throwing error by Clinton first baseman Ian Gac.
The Kernels made it 3-1 in the third as Hainley Statia doubled and scored on another Clinton throwing error. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Madison Edwards tripled to right field and scored on the third Clinton error, this time by second baseman Jose Vallejo to make it 4-1.
The LumberKings wouldn't go away quietly, as they made the score 4-2 in the sixth as John Mayberry singled and stole second. Brett Martinez throw went into center field, allowing Mayberry to advance to third. Martinez tried to pick Mayberry off at third, but the throw sailed over Dallas Morris' head into left field and Mayberry scored easily.
Kernels starter Tommy Mendoza (7-5) scattered six hits and two runs over six innings of work to pick up the win. Chris Howell and Robert Romero combined to give up just three hits and strike out four over the final three frames to keep the margin at 6-2 Kernels.
Clinton starter Omar Poveda (1-10) struck out seven Kernels over the six innings he worked, giving up six hits and four runs (three earned) with a walk.
Game two of this short series with the LumberKings is tomorrow night at 7 pm. Anthony Ortega (1-0) starts for the Kernels against Clinton lefty Zach Phillips (2-6). It's a 100.7 The Fox Buck-A-Cup Thursday as 12 ounce draft beer and sodas as well as slushies are just a buck and bottled water and soda is $2 all game long. Gates open at 6 pm
