Jay named MWL Player of the Week
July 12, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Outfielder Jon Jay was named the Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week for the period lasting from July 3-9, the Swing of the Quad Cities announced Wednesday. The 74th overall pick in the 2006 draft out of the University of Miami, Jay was selected by the Cardinals with the last pick in the second round.
A 21-year-old native of Miami, Jay led all Midwest League hitters with 10 runs batted in during the week, hitting safely in each game while batting .387 (12-31) with six runs scored. He sported a robust .613 slugging percentage during the period, including his first professional home run on July 4 against the Fort Wayne Wizards.
The former star with the Hurricanes is hitting .383 through his first 11 professional games, hitting safely in 10 of them and reaching base in each contest. Hitting out of the third spot in the lineup, he has already picked up six extra-base hits and 12 RBI while coming up big in crucial situations. Jay checked in with the game-winning hit to finish off a sweep of Fort Wayne on July 6, singling in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a dramatic four-run rally. In another late-game situation Monday night, the outfielder followed a bunt single with his first professional stolen base in the top of the 10th inning, eventually coming home to score the game-winning run.
Jay, along with fellow second-half additions Shane Robinson and Tyler Greene, has been instrumental in sparking an offensive attack that has scored 10 or more runs in a game three times over the past week. The Swing currently boast a .271 team batting average that is on pace to break the franchise record of .269 set by the Quad City River Bandits in 1995.
UP NEXT: The Swing of the Quad Cities will return home for a three-game set with the Beloit Snappers starting Wednesday, as LHP Tyler Norrick (0-1, 3.29) is scheduled to pitch the opener against RHP Kyle Waldrop (6-2, 3.62). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 will begin at 6:45 p.m.
NEXT HOMESTAND: The Swing will return to the Quad Cities for a quick three-game homestand against the Beloit Snappers from July 12-14.
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS: The homestand from July 12-14 will coincide with the first Pepsi Kid's Camp of the summer, as Swing players and coaches will be teaching baseball skills to youngsters for the first three-day session of the summer.
