Devil Rays Rally in the Ninth to Win
July 12, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps Wednesday afternoon by a score of 5-4. They rallied in the bottom of the ninth to steal the game away from the Caps.
The Rays trailed by a run heading into the ninth. Whitecaps pitcher Anthony Claggett entered for the final frame. In 39.1 innings pitched this season, Claggett allowed only 2 runs and entered with a 0.46 ERA. The Devil Rays were not intimidated.
Christian Lopez led off with a double to left field. Jason St. Clair came in as a pinch runner and when Hunter Vick hit a sacrifice bunt, St. Clair slid safely into third base. Chris Cunningham then singled to centerfield scoring St. Clair and advancing Vick to second. Neil Walton attempted to put down a bunt but popped it up to the third baseman for an out. Jackson Brennan was up next and he smoked a ball to center field to score Vick and give the D-Rays a walk-off victory.
Greg Reinhard took the mound to start the game for the Baby Rays and lasted 5.1 innings. Reinhard fanned seven Caps and allowed five hits and three earned runs.
Jeff Kamrath entered to finish out the sixth and took the game through the eighth. Kamrath started out strong, striking out five and allowing one hit and one run. An inconsistent eighth inning allowed the Whitecaps to take the lead when Kamrath hit a batter and threw two wild pitches.
Kevin Lynn was impressive as always with a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.
J.T. Hall had a strong outing going 3-3 with two doubles, a walk, a run scored, and an RBI. Jackson Brennan knocked in the winning run while going 2-3 and scoring a run.
The Devil Rays and Whitecaps square off again on Thursday. It's Thirsty Thursday. As always you can get your favorite draft beer or Pepsi fountain pop for only $1. Stick around after the game and head up to the TDS Metrocom Left Field Bar to enjoy live music. This week will feature two bands, "Like its Going out of Style" and "Mega Boy" presented by Soft Rock 95.3.
