Peoria Rivermen News Release

Peoria, IL - The Rivermen did not benefit from beginner's luck in their first shootout game of the 2005-06 season, falling to the Chicago Wolves in a shootout by a score of 4-3. Peoria left winger Peter Sejna had a hand in all three Rivermen goals, posting one goal and two assists on the night.

Chicago center Kevin Doell opened the shootout by converting his attempt versus Peoria goalie Reinhard Divis. The Rivermen called on Peter Sejna to take their first shootout turn, but he was unable to beat Wolves netminder Tuomas Tarkki. After Scott Barney failed for Chicago, Mike Glumac stepped up and scored a top-shelf shootout goal for Peoria. The third shootout round saw the Wolves' Ramzi Abid and center Trent Whitfield of the Rivermen both miss. Chicago defenseman Travis Roche then tallied a shootout goal prior to another Peoria miss by Troy Riddle. In the fifth shootout round, left wing Brian Maloney missed for Chicago, but because Peoria forward Ryan Ramsay missed as well, the Wolves took the 4-3 shootout victory.

The shootout win is the fourth win of the season for the Wolves, who are now 4-6-1-2 on the year and 4-4-0-2 on the road. The Rivermen are now 9-4-0-1 overall and 5-3-0-1 at home.

The Wolves took advantage of a power play to open the scoring in this game. At the 6:10 mark, left wing Brian Maloney passed the puck from the right point to his opposite winger Justin Morrison, who found himself all alone in front of Divis. From just below the left hash marks, Morrison dipped his shoulder to fake Divis before firing the puck by Divis' left arm.

The Rivermen were quick to respond to that Wolves goal. Just 14 seconds later, Peoria left wing Peter Sejna found center Blake Evans at the left hash marks with a nice pass from the left corner. Upon receiving the puck, Evans unleashed a quick shot that went through a screen before going by Tarkki to tie the game at 1-1 at 6:24 of the first period.

Chicago took the lead again at 13:30, once more on the power play. This time winger Ramzi Abid, center Jared Ross, and right wing Scott Barney combined on a nice passing play that went from the right point to the left wing, and then across the goalmouth to Barney, who put the puck into an empty net before Divis could get back across. The goal put Chicago up 2-1.

Just before the first period ended, the Rivermen tied the game at 2-2. Defenseman Mike Mottau made this play from the front of the net, taking a pass out of the left corner from Peter Sejna and backhanding the puck across the low slot toward the right circle. There, winger Mike Glumac got to it and popped it into the upper right corner of the goal with just three seconds remaining in the second period.

The lone goal of the second period came at the 9:05 mark for the Rivermen. During a Peoria power play, center Trent Whitfield streaked into the Chicago zone along the left wing and attempted a wrap-around goal. Although he failed and left the puck sitting at the right post, left winger Peter Sejna pounced on it and stuffed it into the net to give the Rivermen a 3-2 lead.

Just 1:10 into the third period, the Wolves drew even with the Rivermen at 3-3. Left wing Ramzi Abid lit the lamp for Chicago thanks to assists from defenseman Braydon Coburn and center Jared Ross.

Neither team scored in the overtime session, forcing a shootout to determine a winner.

Next up for the Rivermen is a contest against the San Antonio Rampage at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at Carver Arena.
