Cleveland Barons News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Four un-answered goals in the third period was too much for the Barons to overcome in a 6-3 road loss at Grand Rapids Friday night. Grant Stevenson scored a goal and added an assist in the losing effort.
Four consecutive minor penalties against the Grand Rapids Griffins cost the home team as the Barons converted twice for a 2-0 lead after one period of play. Just past the midpoint of the period the Barons were issued a two-man advantage which led to Grant Stevenson's team leading 7th goal of the year. Patrick Rissmiller and Ray DiLauro assisted on the goal for a 1-0 lead with a perfect pass play low in the Grand Rapids zone. Mike Iggulden then scored four-minutes later with another two-man advantage as the Barons finished the first period with a 2-goal advantage. Garrett Stafford and Stevenson assisted on Iggulden's sixth goal of the year.
Grand Rapids responded with a huge second period scoring twice to tie the game at 2-2 after forty minutes. Grand Rapids Ryan Oulahen's first professional goal came at the 4:50 mark of the middle frame on a deflection to trim the Barons lead to one goal. Nate DiCasmirro then registered his sixth of the year to tie the game at 2-2 with a wrist shot from the slot area. DiCasmirro's goal was unassisted and was one of 18-shots on goal from the Griffins, who out-shot the Barons 18-4.
The Griffins continued their powerful attack, scoring four un-answered goals en-route to a 6-3 win. Barons forward Josh Prudden scored to re-establish the Barons lead at 3-2 just 26-seconds into the third period. The Griffins responded with the four remaining goals in a span of 4:39. Valterri Filppula scored twice and added an assist in the third period scoring for the Griffins who improved to 11-3-0-1 overall. Darryl Bootland scored a goal and added two assists while Tomas Kopecky finished the night with three assists for the Griffins.
Both teams pack their bags for a journey back to the Rock N' Roll city for the second of a home-and-home series. The rematch begins tomorrow night at 7 O'clock.
