July 26, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release

(Binghamton, NY)- The Portland Sea Dogs had just three run producing hits on Monday night, but the three generated a lot of runs. Yamaico Navarro had a two-run double, Ryan Lavarnway hit a two-run homer, and Chih-Hsien Chiang blasted a grand slam. Blake Maxwell earned the win, allowing two runs in five innings, as the visiting Sea Dogs defeated the Binghamton Mets 8-4 at NYSEG Stadium.

After two scoreless innings, the Mets started the scoring in the bottom of the third. Mike Nickeas walked to lead off the inning, and ended up not having to run at all, as Raul Reyes lifted a two-run shot just over the right field wall.

Binghamton's lead didn't last long, as the Sea Dogs answered with a huge top of the fourth. Ray Chang singled to get things started, and Luis Exposito followed with a double. With two men on, Yamaico Navarro blooped a double into shallow right field, tying the score at two. Two walks later, the bases were loaded for Chih-Hsien Chiang, who smacked a grand slam to right. Chiang's sixth home run of the season extended his hitting streak to nine straight games.

In the fifth inning, Portland extended the lead. Luis Exposito led off with a walk, but was removed from the basepaths when Yamaico Navarro hit into a fielder's choice. Navarro's stay on the bases wasn't long either, thanks to Ryan Lavarnway's two-run bomb to left field. The home run was Lavarnway's first in Double-A, after he hit 14 longballs with High-A Salem.

The run support was greatly appreciated by Blake Maxwell, who made his first start of the season for the Sea Dogs. Maxwell (1-0) pitched five innings, allowing two runs, three hits, and one walk, while striking out five. On the other side of the ledger, Robert Carson (0-3) struggled for the Mets, allowing eight runs, eight hits, and two walks in four and one-third innings. Ryne Lawson picked up his first save in Double-A, as he pitched the final four innings of the ball game.

Binghamton came back with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Portland was in a more than comfortable position, going on to the 8-4 win.

The Sea Dogs and Mets will play the middle game of their three-game series on Tuesday night at 6:35. Alex Wilson (3-2, 5.31) will make the start for Portland, while Binghamton will turn to Josh Stinson (8-1, 3.04).
