Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the week ending July 25th:

Bowie Baysox first baseman Joseph Mahoney has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending July 25th. The 23-year old was unstoppable at the plate last week, hitting .556 (15-for-27) with two doubles, five home runs, nine RBI, six runs scored, one walk and a 1.185 slugging percentage while leading the Baysox to a record of 5-2 for the week. The 6'7", 255 lb. slugger had three hits or more in four of the games he played in last week, including going 4-for-4 with two home runs, one double and five RBI while leading Bowie to a 10-0 win over Richmond on Saturday night at Prince George's Stadium. Mahoney, who is a native of Albany, New York, led all Eastern League players in nearly every offensive category last week, including batting average (.556), home runs (5), hits (15), total bases (32), extra-base hits (7), slugging percentage (1.185) and OPS (1.757). He also ranked second in on-base percentage (.571) and third in RBI (9). Joseph, was promoted to Bowie on July 9th after hitting .299 with nine homers and 49 RBI in 72 games with the Frederick Keys of the Class-A Carolina League, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the sixth round of the 2007 draft after batting .305 with 17 home runs during his junior season at the University of Richmond.

Lance Pendleton, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 25th. The 6'3", 205 lb. hurler made a pair of starts for the Thunder last week and posted a record of 2-0 with 12 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. The 26-year old made his first appearance of the week on Monday night at the Diamond in Richmond and allowed one hit and four walks while striking out five batters in six scoreless innings of work to lead the Thunder to a 6-0 win against the Flying Squirrels. Pendleton, who is a native of Kingwood, Texas, was even more dominant during his second start of the week on Saturday night at Altoona, striking out seven batters while surrendering just two hits and two walks over seven shutout innings to earn the win in Trenton's 2-0 victory. Pendleton had appeared in 21 games for the Thunder this season, 20 of them starts, and has a record of 9-4 with 100 strikeouts and a 3.49 ERA in 108.1 innings. Lance, who currently leads the league in strikeouts (100), is ranked third in batting average against (.215) and tied for third in wins (9), was selected by the New York Yankees in the fourth round of the 2005 draft after posting a record of 5-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 18 appearances during his junior season at Rice University.
