Aerodynamics.
. Sunday Suspension. Akron's contest Sunday afternoon against the Reading Phillies was suspended with a tied 5-5 score in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Aeros led early in the contest thanks to a sacrifice fly that scored Jordan Henry in the first and then an RBI single from left fielder John Drennen in the second. Right fielder Jerad Head followed Drennen's hit with a two-run homer to right field before Reading responded to cut the deficit to 4-2 after three innings. Second baseman Jason Kipnis collected another run-scoring hit while the Phillies chased Akron starter Kelvin De La Cruz out of the game in the fourth. Rain halted action with Reading's Matt Rizzotti at the plate against reliever Bryan Price, with runners on first and third base along with two outs in the frame. The game will resume at First Energy Stadium on Tuesday, August 17th and will be followed by that evening's regular scheduled game in seven innings. All statistics from yesterday will not count until the game's completion.
. The White House. The Aeros announced Monday morning that starting pitcher Alex White is the recipient of this week's Akron Aeros Player of the Week award. The 21-year-old product of the University of North Carolina was 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his two starts this past week, leading Akron to victories on Monday and Saturday nights. He has thrown six consecutive quality starts and is now 4-1 with a 0.70 ERA and 29 strikeouts against three walks in 38.1 innings pitched since June 25th. White is the second player on the team with two such awards this year and was Cleveland's first-round selection (15th overall) in the June 2009 Draft.
. McBride Wars. White won the award, but that does not discredit the recent accomplishments of outfielder Matt McBride. The Akron slugger batted .435 (10-for-23) in six games last week, doubling four times along with two home runs, six runs scored and seven RBI. McBride will be one of the leading candidates for the upcoming Eastern League Player of the Month as in 24 games since June 28th, the 25-year-old easily leads the EL with 12 home runs, a .870 slugging percentage and a 1.297 OPS.
. Sun Devil Surprise. Another hot hitter for the Aeros is the second baseman Kipnis, who was Cleveland's second-round selection in the June 2009 Draft. He is now batting .474 (18-for-38) over his last nine games played dating back to June 15th, increasing his Double-A batting average to .329 in 37 games. On the season in 91 combined contests between Akron and Class A Kinston, the converted outfielder out of Arizona State University is batting .313 with 23 doubles, 12 home runs, 66 runs scored and 47 RBI.
. No Joshing. The Cleveland Indians announced Sunday that right-hander Josh Tomlin will make his major-league debut in a start Tuesday night against the New York Yankees. Tomlin, a 25-year-old native of Tyler, TX, was 14-9 with a 4.16 ERA in 26 games (25 starts) for the Aeros in 2009, just the third player in franchise history to win at least 14 games in a single season.
