'Wolves Fall 11-2 to Altoona in Series Opener
July 26, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves failed in their attempt to win back-to-back games as they surrendered nine runs in the top of the eighth inning and fell to the Altoona Curve by a score of 11-2.
Altoona struck first against Erie starter Brooks Brown in the top of the fifth. Brandon Jones led off with a single and he was doubled home by Yung Chi Chen for a 1-0 lead. Chen would come home to score on a one-out single by Anthony Norman for a 2-0 lead.
The 'Wolves battled back against Altoona starter Jeff Locke in the bottom of the sixth. Locke had retired nine of his first 15 outs via strikeout but the 'Wolves finally cashed in against the lefty in the sixth. Shawn Roof blooped a single to right and Billy Nowlin was hit by a pitch to put two on base for Rawley Bishop. Bishop singled up the middle, scoring Roof to make it a one-run game at 2-1. Deik Scram followed and extended his current hitting streak to four straight on a base knock to center, scoring Nowlin, tying the game at 2-2.
The game would remain tied until the top of the eighth when Altoona exploded for nine, putting the game out of reach. Brown faced the first three hitters of the inning. Anthony Norman led off with a double and he advanced to third on a single by Chase d'Arnaud. Matt Hague singled to left, scoring Norman for a 3-2 Curve lead. Brown would exit for reliever Luis Marte. Jordy Mercer laid down a sacrifice bunt pushing the runners into scoring position. Erie then intentionally walked Chris Watts to set up a potential double play against Miles Durham. The plan did not work as Durham turned a Marte pitch into Altoona's first grand slam for the season and a 7-2 lead. Jones followed with his second hit and Chen followed with his first home run for a 9-2 advantage. Altoona would push two more runs across for an 11-2 lead.
Brown (8-7) allowed five runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts in seven-plus innings of work.
Erie and Altoona meet in the middle game of the three-game series on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park.7:05 First Pitch. RHP Brayan Villarreal (0-1, 3.00 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Bryan Morris (4-4, 4.78 ERA).
