Anthony Reyes to Start Tuesday for Aeros

July 26, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

AKRON, OH - Cleveland Indians pitcher Anthony Reyes will continue his rehab assignment Tuesday night with the Akron Aeros at Canal Park. Reyes will start tomorrow in Akron's matchup against the Bowie Baysox and is Sunday afternoon's expected starter as well. The right-hander underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on June 12th, 2009 and will initially be on a three-inning or 50-pitch limit, whichever occurs first.

Reyes last pitched for the Indians on May 22nd of last season against the Cincinnati Reds before landing on the disabled list with his right elbow injury. He went 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA in eight MLB starts in 2009 and has already made two starts this year during his rehabilitation with the rookie-level Arizona League Indians. He was 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA in his 4.1 innings pitched, striking out six against two walks and three runs (two earned).

Cleveland acquired Reyes from the St. Louis Cardinals organization in a trade on July 26th, 2008 for former Aero reliever Luis Perdomo and cash. A product of the University of Southern California, Reyes owns a 13-26 record and a 5.12 ERA across 67 games (52 starts) in his five-year major league career. He is a member of the Indians 40-man roster but does not count against the limit because he is on the 60-day disabled list.

The Cardinals originally selected Reyes in the 15th round of the June 2003 Draft and he most recently pitched in Double-A in 2004 with the Tennessee Diamond Jaxx of the Southern League. He was 6-2 with a 3.03 ERA in 12 starts for Tennessee that year, and he has a career 18-11 record with a 3.15 ERA in 55 Class AAA starts. Baseball America named him the top pitching prospect in the St. Louis organization prior to the 2005 and 2006 seasons and he was the winning pitcher in Game 1 of the 2006 World Series.

Akron begins a weeklong home stand tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park against the second-place Bowie Baysox. Tonight is Dollar Dog Monday and all Aeros fans can acquire FREE ticket vouchers for the game at any local Ritzman Pharmacy location. Eastern League All-Star Paolo Espino (9-3, 3.71 ERA) will make the start Monday night for the Aeros against Bowie's Chorye Spoone (7-5, 3.70 ERA). Monday evening's radio broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on Fox Sports 1350 AM and at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Akron Aeros team offices at (330) 253-5151.
