Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charleston, S.C. - The Checkers wasted a brilliant goaltending performance by their netminder Jeff Jakaitis and were unable to find the back of the net against the South Carolina Stingrays in a 1-0 defeat.

Both Jakaitis and Stingrays goalie Jonathan Boutin played stellar hockey resulting in a scoreless contest through 60 minutes of action. The Stingrays had eight changes on the power-play but several sparkling saves by Jakaitis made sure that the home team remained scoreless. Boutin also left his best saves for the third period denying several great chances by Charlotte to register a goal. As a result of the inability to tally a goal in regulation, the game went to overtime. The story remained the same in the extra session with both team held scoreless by the opposing goaltender.

The game found its way to a shootout where South Carolina received goals from Nikita Kashirsky, Travis Morin and Spencer Carberry with the game winner. Checkers only scored twice in the shootout and it was Michel Leveille and Jeff Miles resulting in a 1-0 defeat.

Jakaitis turned aside 39 shots while Boutin stopped 24.

The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on March 8 against the Trenton Devils at 4 P.M. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. For season ticket information, please call 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
