
Cyclones' Three Goal Third Period Ices 5-0 Win

READING, Pennsylvania - The Cincinnati Cyclones used three third period goals 1:43 apart to blow open a 5-0 win over the Reading Royals on Saturday night. Ryan Nie stopped 27 shots to collect his first shutout as a Cyclone, as Ben Gordon chipped in with a pair of goals and Barret Ehgoetz had a goal and two assists to pace the win. Cincinnati maintains a two point lead in the North Division with the win.
The Cyclones scored a pair of first period goals to grab a 2-0 lead. Cincinnati took the lead at 11:11 when defenseman Tom Sawatske grabbed a puck at the top of the right circle and rifled it past James Reimer for his third goal of the season. Jake Dietrich and Ian McKenzie got the assists after wrestling the puck away from a Royals defender and snapped a pass to Sawatske. Less than four minutes later, at 15:08, rookie Ben Gordon got loose in the high slot and took a feed off the left half wall from Barret Ehgoetz and collected his 14th score of the year. The physical nature of the contest took hold as a pair of fights occurred in the opening frame as Ian McKenzie and T.J. McElroy were involved in separate tilts. The shots on goal favored Reading, 13-12, in the period.
There was no scoring in the second period. Cincinnati had four power play chances in the stanza while Reading had a pair as well. The shots on goal went the way of Cincinnati, 17-7, in the period.
The Cyclones exploded for three goals in a 1:43 span to put the game away. Ian McKenzie's goal twelfth goal t 1:41 got the period started the right way. Dustin Sproat and Brandon Scero handed out the assists. Just 49 seconds later, at 2:30, Barret Ehgoetz got his 20th goal of the year from Jamie Coghlan extended the lead to 4-0. Just 54 seconds later, at 3:24, Gordon picked up his second of the night and 15th of the campaign from Ehgoetz to close the scoring. It was the 20th time this season that the Cyclones have scored three or more goals in a period. Cincinnati won the shots battle in the period, 10-7, and for the game outshot the Royals, 39-27.
Ryan Nie took the victory, stopping all 27 shots he faced. He is 13-3 since joining the Cyclones. It was his eleventh pro shutout, his fourth in the ECHL and first as a Cyclones.
The Cyclones are now 33-22-5 on the season, while Reading is 21-35-4. The Cyclones are on the road next week with games at Johnstown (Friday, March 13 at 7pm) and at Trenton (Sunday, March 15 at 4pm).
