South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - It was a scoreless game at the North Charleston Coliseum for 65 minutes between the South Carolina Stingrays and the Charlotte Checkers forcing a shoot out to determine a winner. That winner would be the Rays on a Spencer Carbery shoot out goal in the sixth round.
"That game really had a playoff feel to it," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "Both teams played very hard tonight, and both teams deserved at least one point on the night."
In what has been a back and forth series between these two teams, the first period was a back and forth period with neither team able to capitalize. The Rays had three power plays and put 11 shots on net, but could not get anything by Jeff Jakaitis. Conversely, The Checkers had two power plays and put eight shots on net, but could not solve Jonathan Boutin.
The second period played out much like the one that preceded it. Both teams had opportunities, including power play opportunities, but in the end, neither team could take the lead. The period was not without excitement though, as Spencer Carbery and Cedrick Bernier tangoed at center ice with both men receiving five minute fighting majors. The game would come down to the final period of play, waiting for one team to take over.
The third period would merely be prelude to overtime and a shootout, as the Rays began to take control near the end of the period. 65 minutes of scoreless hockey lead to a shoot out, and it was only fitting as the goaltenders stole the show for the entire game. In the first round of the shoot out, Ryan Hillier couldn't score for the Checkers, but rookie Nikita Kashirski in his first game for the Rays, gave them the 1-0 lead. Neither Chris Murray nor Maxime Lacroix could score in the second round, and Chris Capraro and Pierre-Luc O'Brien had the same fate in the third round. Michel Leveille would tie things up in the fourth round with Josh Godfrey unable to score. Jeff Miles gave the Checkers their first lead of the night on the shoot out, but Travis Morin fired a wicked wrist shot to tie the shoot out at two after five rounds. In the sixth round, Mike Bayrack could not score, but Carbery did, jamming the puck in the far side post for the win.
The winning goaltender was Boutin who stopped all 24 shots he faced through regulation and overtime, and four of the six shoot out attempts. The losing goaltender was Jakaitis who stopped all 39 shots he faced through regulation and overtime, and three of the six shoot out attempts. The Rays went 0-8 on the power play while killing off all three short handed situations they faced.
