Reading Acquires Forward Mike Curry

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has acquired forward Mike Curry from the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL as completion of the future considerations element of the trade which sent defenseman Patrick Wellar to South Carolina for forward Ryan Toomey (and futures) on February 27, 2009. In separate transactions, the Royals also (i) loaned defenseman Steve Ward to the Portland Pirates of the AHL; and (ii) released forward Scott Estey.

Curry (6'3/200) (24), a first year pro who hails from Eagle River, Alaska, started this season with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL where he scored a goal and assisted on two others (three points) in twelve games before being traded to the Stingrays in early January. In twenty-six games with South Carolina, Curry scored two goals and picked up nine assists (eleven points). A seventh round pick of the Los Angles Kings in 2004, Curry played his collegiate hockey at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he scored 11 goals and added twenty-four assists (thirty-five points) in 115 games. For Ward, this marks his fourth call-up to the AHL (with four different teams). Ward has scored six goals and assisted on nineteen others (twenty-five points) in thirty-nine games with the Royals.

The Royals return to action tonight (March 7 @ 7:05 pm) when the Cincinnati Cyclones visit the Sovereign Center.
