Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Checkers wanted to bounce back after a tough loss this past Tuesday night and they did it in fine fashion defeating the Mississippi Sea Wolves by a score of 5-1.

Chris Capraro's return to the lineup immediately made a difference when he scored on a Checkers power play at 11:47. Capraro stood at the doorstep of the goal-crease, took a nice feed from Ryan Hiller and blasted the puck past Sea Wolves goaltender Jeremy Duchesne putting the Checkers up 1-0.

During the middle stanza, the Sea Wolves evened things up on Bill LeClarc blueline shot that went through traffic and over the shoulder of Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis at 16:00.

The third period was used by the Checkers to recapture their lead and never look back. Hillier broke the tie at 4:35 when he found a loose puck in the crease after Duchesne couldn't properly hold a Kenny Smith slap shot and fired in past the sprawling netminder. Checkers forward David Rutherford tallied a goal after blasting a shot over the blocker side of Duchesne at 11:07 giving the Checkers a 3-1 lead. Mike Bayrack added another goal when his slap shot fooled the Sea Wolves goaltender at 12:16 putting Charlotte up 4-1. Duchesne was pulled in favor of John Hallas but he didn't fair too well as Checkers centerman Brad Ralph rifled a shot through traffic and between the legs of the rookie goaltender scoring the final goal of the game at 19:05 solidifying the Checkers 5-1 victory.

Notes: Jakaitis stopped 26 of 27 shots...The Checkers scored once on seven power play chances...the Sea Wolves couldn't score a single power play goal on five attempts...the Checkers face the Everblades in a rematch of Tuesday night on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at Time Warner Cable Arena.
