Charlotte Checkers News Release

Dayton, OH - The Charlotte Checkers scored early and late but it still wasn't enough to stop the Dayton Bombers as they would lose by a score of 4-3.

The Checkers got the scoring started twenty seconds into the game, Charlotte forward Mike Taylor buried a one-timer past Bombers netminder Paul Drew during a delayed penalty call against Dayton. Despite great chances for both teams, the period would end by the score of 1-0.

The middle frame brought goal scoring for the home team. Dan Riedel got the scoring started when he fired a sharp angle shot that hit the body of Checkers goalie Jeff Jakaitis and squeaked past the goal line at 12:55. The Bombers would take their first lead of the period after forward Mike McLean beat Jakaitis at 13:57. The second period would end with the Bombers taking a 2-1 lead.

During the third period, the Bombers took a two-goal advantage after Danny Lapointe found a loose puck in the slot after a Jakaitis save. Laptoine wasted no time wristing a shot behind Jakaitis at 2:58 putting his team up 3-1. Later, Checkers forward Lee Falardeau helped his team tie the contest. First he set up Mike Taylor's goal as he sent a cross crease pass that Taylor banged home at 8:37 slashing the Bombers lead to one goal. Then while on the power play, Falardeau fed defenseman Julien Brouillette who made no mistake at 12:40 locking the game at 3-3. The Bombers would move on to score the winning goal on a turnover just inside the Checkers zone when Mike McLean rifled a one-timer over the catching shoulder of Jakaitis at 17:16. Despite their third period comeback, the Checkers skated away with a 4-3 loss.
