Checkers Defeat Nailers, 4-3
February 12, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C.-The Checkers are heading on the road for three games so they wanted to give the home crowd something remember before hitting the road. They did just that defeating the Wheeling Nailers, 4-3.
Neither team was able to score in the first period of the game; however, things changed in the middle stanza. The Nailers finally beat Checkers netminder, Mike Ayers when Vadim Silvchenko scored on a quick shot after a Wheeling face-off win inside Checkers territory at 2:44. Charlotte would answer right back when Jeff Kyrzakos flipped the puck over the left pad of Wheeling goalie, Martin Houle at 3:16 tying the game at 1-1. Charlotte would gain the lead on the two-man advantage when a loose puck was banged home by Ryan Murphy at 7:24. It was the ensuing shift that saw Wheeling tie the contest after Justin Chwedoruk slid the puck between the legs of Ayers tying the game at 2-2 at 8:05. The Checkers would again retrieve their lead thanks to a Mike Bayrack one-timer at 17:15 on a nice pass from Blake Bellefeuille. This put Charlotte up, 3-2.
Lee Falardeau would extend the Checkers lead during the last period by driving the puck from behind the Nailers net right to the front where he blasted a shot past the sprawling Houle at 8:20 putting Charlotte up, 4-2. Kevin Croxton would find the back of the net cutting the Checkers lead to 4-3 at 12:41. It wouldn't be enough to mount a comeback as Charlotte would skate away with a 4-3 victory.
Notes: Ayers stopped 39 of 42 shots while Houle turned aside 23 of 27...Both teams had five power play chances but only the Checkers could tally a power play goal.
