Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (February 12, 2008) - The Trenton Devils hoped that some home cooking would help them give Texas their fifth loss in regulation. But Anton Khudobin's strong play in net stymied the Devils attack and gave the Wildcatters a 3-0 win.
Trenton came out of the gate strong against Texas, refusing to be intimidated by the hard checks and swift play of the Wildcatters' top lines. But it was surprise shooting that put Trenton back on its heels as two behind-the-back blind goals in the first period would be the difference-makers in the contest.
Colin Nicholson netted the first tally with a strong move towards the slot but with his back to the Devils goal. Jay Pemberton had him tied up, but a quick no-look shot caught both the defenseman and Dave Caruso off-guard. The puck sneaked into the far-side corner for the deciding goal 5:27 into the game.
Thirteen minutes later Ross Carlson accomplished the same feat, giving the Wildcatters a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. The goal was Carlson's sixteenth of the season.
A scoreless second period featured several great opportunities for the Devils, including several big power plays. But Khudobin refused to yield to any pressure in front of the net, turning aside all nine Trenton shots that period.
The Devils' went 0-for-6 on the power play and gave up a shorthanded goal to Brandon Benedict in the third period. The forward stole the puck away at the blue line and raced across the ice on a two-on-one in which he forced a shot under Caruso's pads.
Caruso took a hard-knock loss, stopping 23 of 26 shots, while Khudobin earned his third shutout of the season with a perfect 26 save night.
The Trenton Devils look to drop the Cincinnati Cyclones Friday, February 15 at 7:30pm at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, NJ. It is Scorch Bobblehead Night and Mascot Mania, where the first 2,000 fans receive a Scorch bobblehead and all attendees can witness some of the best mascots in the Trenton area put on a show, including the Phillie Phanatic.
