Khudobin Keeps out Devils with Second Straight Shutout, Winning Streak at 10
February 12, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Texas Wildcatters News Release
Trenton, NJ- Anton Khudobin returned from a brief call-up with AHL Houston to log his second straight shutout and help the Wildcatters to their club-record 10th consecutive victory, a 3-0 win over the Trenton Devils Tuesday night in front of 1,955 at Sovereign Bank Arena.
Colin Nicholson scored his third goal of the season-but second of the road trip-on a no-look backhander at 5:27 of the first period to give the Catters (38-4-3-4) a 1-0 lead over the Titans (18-26-1-4).
Ross Carlson would score on a similar play to extend the lead to 2-0, taking a wrap around attempt into the low slot and firing a backhander through traffic and past Trenton keeper David Caruso at 18:40. Scott Champagne and Mike Grenzy would each continue their recent success with assists on the play.
The teams would skate to a scoreless second period, though Texas would dominate much of the action and not subject Khudobin to more than intermittent pressure all game.
Brandon Benedict, also recently reunited with his Texas teammates after an AHL call up, made the score 3-0 with a shorthanded goal at 2:23 of the third period. Carlson would collect an assist on the goal, Benedict's 16th of the season.
The teams would each fire 26 shots on net, but Khudobin would be the difference as he extended his shutout streak to 143 minutes 53 seconds, dating back to the second period of the January 31 game versus the Florida Everblades. Khudobin and the Catters shut out the Everblades 2-0 in his last appearance for Texas on February 1.
Khudobin collects his 20th victory of the season with the win, improving his record to 20-1-1-3.
The Catters would finish 0-for-4 on the power play while holding the Devils scoreless in six chances.
The win extends the club-record winning streak to 10 games and extends the unbeaten-in-regulation streak to 12 games (11-0-1-0), their second longest of the season.
The Wildcatters continue their northern road trip with a 6:05 CT Valentine's Day game at the Elmira Jackals.
The Texas Wildcatters are the proud ECHL affiliate of the Houston Aeros of the AHL and the NHL's Minnesota Wild. Book your group now with the Catters-call 409.951.5500.
