Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
PAPILLION, NEB. - While the Omaha Storm Chasers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, the St. Paul Saints followed with nine unanswered runs and claimed Friday's game, 9-3 over Omaha.
Walter Pennington served as Omaha's opener for a bullpen game and faced the minimum over 3.0 scoreless innings, in just his second professional start, while striking out three.
The Storm Chasers gave Pennington early run support, as the first four batters of the bottom of the first inning reached base on two singles and two walks. John Rave singled in Clay Dungan to open the game's scoring, then Tyler Gentry drove home Nick Loftin with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Omaha added a run in the third as Gentry singled in Loftin, but the Chasers were limited to just three hits over the final six innings and couldn't get a runner past second base from the fourt hinning on.
As soon as the Storm Chasers bullpen took over in the fourth, the Saints mounted a comeback. James McArthur loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth but struck out the next two, before allowing a two-run single to bring St. Paul within one.
Joe Barlow took the mound behind McArthur in the fifth and the first four St. Paul hitters in the inning reached, including a two-run homer that gave the Saints the lead for good, before they added a pair more in the inning for a four-run frame.
Barlow allowed three straight hits to open the sixth, capped by the second homer of the game off Barlow for St. Paul's Hernan Pérez, a three-run shot that brought the score to 9-3.
Steven Cruz took over for Barlow with two outs in the sixth and fired 2.1 hitless and scoreless innings, with a season-high five strikeouts, then Dylan Coleman pitched a perfect ninth inning, but Omaha couldn't mound a rally at the plate to fall for the third straight night.
The Storm Chasers return to action Saturday at 6:35pm CT with right-hander Andrew Hoffmann headed to the mound.
