Charlotte Checkers News Release
Gwinnett, GA. - The Charlotte Checkers played their second game in a row against the Gwinnett Gladiators and the outcome was the same as the previous encounter as the team was defeated by a score of 4-1.
If it wasn't for Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis, the first period might have looked very different as he made two breathtaking saves to keep his team close. The only shot that managed to get past him was a power play tally by Gwinnett forward Pat Bateman who blasted a rebound in at 9:00 after Jakaitis stopped a shot from Jordan Fox.
During the second period, the Gladiators extended their advantage when Matt Siddall intercepted a cross-ice pass inside the Checkers zone and streaked down the ice blasting a shot past Jakaitis at 15:06. This gave Gwinnett a 2-0 advantage over Charlotte after two periods.
The Checkers finally got on the board when defenseman Ethan Graham rifled a shot over the glove of Gwinnett goalie Joe Fallon at 5:59. This slashed the Gladiators lead to 2-1 but the home team would quickly recapture a two goal advantage when Siddall scored his second of the game redirecting a pass from Travis Fuller past Jakaitis at 8:00. The Gladiators Adam Berti added an empty net goal at 19:16 giving Gwinnett a 4-1 victory over Charlotte.
Notes: Jakaitis stopped 39 of 42 shots while Fallon turned aside 26 of 27...The Checkers went scoreless on two power play chances while Gwinnett scored once out of four attempts.
The Checkers are playing in their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game will take place Feb. 8 against the Florida Everblades at 4:00pm. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are in their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $200.
