Johnstown Chiefs News Release

TROY, Oh. - The Johnstown Chiefs were dealt an 8-3 loss by the Dayton Bombers on Saturday night at the Hobart Arena in Troy, Ohio.

The loss left the Chiefs' record at 26-18-2 good for 54 points.

For the second game in a row, Johnstown saw its opponent jump on the scoreboard first. Justin Bowers, who had spent time this season with the Chiefs' AHL affiliate Lake Erie Monsters, one-timed a shot past Ian Keserich with 12:47 gone by in the opening period. 4:54 later, though, Toby LaFrance wired a slap shot past David Shantz to even things up at one. The power play goal was assisted by Greg Gallagher and Jarrett Konkle, and snapped an 0-for-13 skid with the man advantage. The Chiefs gave momentum back to Dayton, though, with a late-period penalty and all-star defenseman Greg Labenski put his seventh goal of the season behind Keserich with less than a second remaining on the clock.

With the start of the second period, the floodgates opened and pucks were pouring into the net on both end. The Bombers opened up a 3-1 edge with Tomas Zaborsky's unassisted power play goal at 9:17, but Johnstown cut it back to one when Petr Pohl blew a slap shot past Shantz on the power play at 11:05. It was Pohl's seventh power play goal of the season. After Milan Maslonka took a delay of game minor, Blair Yaworski tied the game at three with Pohl and Bushee setting him up in the high slot for a wrister that beat Shantz to the blocker side. Dayton fought back with two even strength goals from Zaborsky and Labenski to take a two goal lead into the second intermission.

At the onset of the third, Todd Griffith looked for all the world like he would get the Chiefs back within one goal. Pohl sprung him behind the Dayton defense with a gorgeous cross ice pass, but Shantz came out to challenge and denied Griffith his third goal of the season. Dayton then seized control with Zaborsky and Labenski completing their hat tricks, and Christian Gaudet adding Dayton's eighth of the game for insurance.

Keserich made 36 saves in taking the loss while the Chiefs' power play went 3-for-5.
