Alaska Aces News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Chad Painchaud scored twice and Yutaka Fukufuji out-dueled Jean-Philippe Lamoureux as Bakersfield sent Alaska to its second straight loss with a 4-2 win Friday in front of 4,618 at Rabobank Arena.
The Aces (27-16-3) have lost back-to-back games for the first time since before Christmas, but did not lose any ground in the West Division standings, as first-place Victoria again fell to Las Vegas at home, 4-2. Alaska still trails the West leaders by five points heading into tomorrow night's game at Ontario, also a loser at home Friday (5-1 to Stockton).
Bruce Graham broke a scoreless tie with 12 seconds left in the first period, giving the Condors a 1-0 lead at the break. Ryan Turek scored his first goal in three years at 11:06 of the second period, ripping a slap shot past Fukufuji from the right circle, but that would prove to be the high-water mark for the Aces.
Mark Derlago gave Bakersfield the lead for good at 13:57 of the second, flipping in a centering pass from Mark Pope. Painchaud scored his first of two goals off the rush with 1:19 left in the middle frame, and Bakersfield took a 3-1 lead into the final period. The score remained that way until Painchaud backhanded home an empty-netter with 66 seconds left in regulation. Bryan Miller's power play goal with 17.7 seconds left accounted for the final margin.
Both Alaska goals were assisted by Luke Erickson, named ECHL Plus Performer of the Month early Friday after finishing a league-best +12 during the month of January. Erickson scored in nine of 13 games during the month and did not finish minus in any game as Alaska went 9-2-2 in January.
The Aces have lost their first two games in February heading into tomorrow's clash with Pacific Division leader Ontario at 6:00 p.m. Alaska holds a 5-1 record against the Reign this year, including a three-game sweep just last week in Anchorage. The Aces complete their four-game road trip Sunday at 3:00 p.m. against Stockton. Both games will be broadcast live on KFQD AM 750, with the Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show getting underway 15 minutes prior to the opening puck drop.
