Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, Ill. (January 20, 2005) â Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jason Christie of the Peoria Rivermen of the ECHL announced today that eighth-year center Russ Guzior (GOOZ-zee-uhr) has been acquired from the Mississippi Sea Wolves in exchange for the rights to seventh-year center John Evangelista, who was claimed off waivers by the Rivermen from the Louisiana IceGators on January 15.
Guzior â a 5-foot-10, 190-pound native of Chicago, Ill. â collected four points (1g, 3a) in 15 games with Mississippi, after opening the year with the Quad City Mallards of the United Hockey League (UHL). In his third professional season (1999-2000), the 31-year-old registered single-season career bests in assists (31) and points (59) in 66 games with the Mobile Mysticks (now operating as the Gwinnett Gladiators) and was named Team MVP for his efforts. His single-season, career-best effort in goal scoring came two seasons ago (2002-2003) with the El Paso Buzzards of the Central Hockey League (CHL), for whom he tallied 29 goals.
Guzior enjoyed a four-year (1993-1997) NCAA Division I college hockey career with the Providence Friars of Hockey East, tallying 107 points (42g, 65a) and 72 penalty minutes (PIM) in 117 games. Selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 11th round (281st overall) of 1993 NHL Entry Draft, he was a member of the Providence 1996 Hockey East Championship Team, and he led Providence in scoring during his junior and senior seasons.
