Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC – The Victoria Salmon Kings latest acquisition has come in the form of a blue collar NHL spark plug.

The Salmon Kings have inked a deal with 5'10 205 lbs. Mark Smith of the NHL franchise San Jose Sharks. Smith played his junior hockey with the Lethbridge Hurricanes for General Manager and Head Coach Bryan Maxwell. He has played a total of 202 games with San Jose netting 29 points and 259 penalty minutes over the last four seasons.

Smith was a ninth round pick in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft with the San Jose Sharks, and has played the last seven seasons in professional hockey with the Sharks and the Kentucky Thoroughblades of the AHL.

Smith made his NHL debut in 2000-01 playing 42 games with the big club after being called up from the Thoroughblades. Smith has led the Sharks in face-off win percentage all four years he has played with San Jose.

In Smith's final season of junior he finished with 109 points and 206 penalty minutes in 70 games.

Smith will add grit and intensity to the Salmon Kings line-up and the fact he is a ninth round draft pick playing in the NHL is a testament to the size of his heart. Maxwell had one word when asked what type of player he was adding to the roster on Thursday, his answer was "star!"
