Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC â The ECHL fans in Victoria as hard as it has been of late, with the losses and the injuries to key performers, may have seen the future of the Salmon Kings franchise on Wednesday. For weeks Head Coach and General Manager Bryan Maxwell told the media he was going to make changes, and he has.
With every new acquisition Maxwell has brought a bigger, stronger, more talented player into the fold. The fans at the Bear Mountain Arena got a taste of that on Wednesday with play of winger Chris Corrinet who Maxwell signed earlier in the day.
Credit Maxwell for not sitting on his hands during these tough times and it is unfortunate that the players he is adding are just putting out fires as his team is rife with injury. Credit also the 2038 Salmon Kings faithful that braved the rain and bitter past few weeks, the same faithful that cheered the Salmon Kings off the ice after another dominant first period.
The Long Beach Ice Dogs beat the Salmon Kings 3-1 though, and still remain two points behind the Bakersfield Condors for first place in the West Division, as the Condors defeated the Idaho Steelheads by the same 3-1 score.
Marco Rosa broke the scoreless tie at 10:12 of the second on a break-away goal that Salmon Kings goalie Jason Stone had little chance on.
Then at 15:30, Salmon Kings defenseman Adam Campbell, was assessed a four minute roughing penalty after picking a partner that didn't want to dance and the Ice Dogs capitalized. Paul Spadafora and Paul Dunphy set up Trevor Read and Long Beach went to the break with a two goal lead.
It was then Corrinet who put the Salmon Kings back into the game. Corrinet was a handful for the Ice Dogs all night as they found it very difficult to control the four year AHL veteran. Short handed Corrinet stripped the puck from the Ice Dogs defenseman as he dangled in front of his goalie Olivier Michaud, and Corrinet put the puck only where the net could stop it.
Victoria was unable to contain the powerful trio of Nathan Martz, Evan Cheverie and Chris Kenady though, as all three were in on Kenady's goal at 18:28 of the final period and the Ice Dogs salted away another victory against the Salmon Kings.
Victoria gets a day off on Thursday before welcoming Scott Gomez and the Alaska Aces on Friday January 21, 2005, game time is 7:00 p.m. PST at Bear Mountain Arena. Tickets are available at www.selectyourtickets.com or by phone at 250-220-7777.
