Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - Bobby Wernes and Aaron Mizell each went 2-for-4, while each adding RBI's in a three-run fifth inning, as the Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the West Virginia Black Bears 5-4 in front of 3,720 fans at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, on Wednesday night.

The Black Bears took the lead first, scoring one run each in the first and second innings. But for the second night in a row, the 'Cats fought back to earn a come-from-behind victory.

Entering the bottom of the second frame down 2-0, Cesar Carrasco got the 'Cats on the board with an RBI ground out, before Brooks Marlow drove home Pat Porter one batter later with an RBI single to even the score at 2-2.

The score stayed tied heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, when Mizell put the 'Cats on top with a base hit to right field that drove home Johnny Sewald. That brought up Wernes, who drove home Antonio Nunez, as well as Mizell, with a line drive single to center field, putting Tri-City ahead 5-2.

Right-handed starter Trent Thornton pitched the first five innings for the 'Cats, striking out four batters and allowing only two runs on four hits.

He was relieved by fellow righty Scott Weathersby, who tossed three frames, allowing only two unearned runs on two hits, while striking out two batters.

Tri-City reliever Adam Whitt replaced Weathersby to start the top of the ninth, after the Black Bears trimmed the 'Cats lead to 5-4. However, Whitt retired West Virginia in order in the ninth frame, earning his second professional save, and helping advance the ValleyCats' record to 21-17.

After taking the first two games of this three-game set against West Virginia, Tri-City will look to go for the sweep on Thursday in the series finale. On the mound for the ValleyCats will be LHP Alex Winkelman (2-0, 1.69), with RHP Seth McGarry (1-0, 3.21) getting the start for the Black Bears.
