State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Josh Swirchak produced his second consecutive multi-hit game, but the State College Spikes were held to just four hits as a team and fell to the Vermont Lake Monsters, 3-0, on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Swirchak, who collected three hits on Tuesday night, delivered late in the game with a single in the seventh and a double down the right field line in the ninth to give the Spikes (18-19) some hope. However, State College could not sustain the offense enough to repeat Tuesday's six-run comeback.

Dailyn Martinez (2-3) took the loss, but threw six quality innings for the Spikes. Martinez allowed three runs, though just one was earned, on seven hits and a hit batsman. The right-hander also struck out four batters in the effort.

Craig Aikin's infield single in the third was the only other hit for State College, but the Spikes had the tying run at the plate in the eighth inning following a walk and an error before a strikeout ended the frame.

Vermont (16-21) took the lead in the second on Skye Bolt's RBI double, and added a pair of runs in the third. Richie Martin began the inning with another double and scored on an error. Nick Collins also contributed a single that brought home a run.

Lake Monsters starter Jon Massad (3-3) tossed six innings for the win, yielding just one hit and one walk as he began the Vermont shutout. Massad also struck out two batters on the night.

Derek De Young continued the string of zeroes as he gave up a hit and a walk while notching two strikeouts, and Ryan Gorton (1) finished it off with a one-hit ninth in which he also struck out two for the save.

Casey Grayson singled in the fourth on a play that was originally ruled an error. Grayson has safely reached base in all 19 home games he has played this season.

State College will look to avoid the sweep on Thursday as they host Vermont in the finale of a three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Juan Perez (4-1), who has thrown 12 straight scoreless innings, on the mound for the Spikes. Left-hander Evan Manarino (2-3) gets the start for the Lake Monsters.

It's a $1 Beer Thursday at the ballpark, presented by 93.7 THE BUS.
