Auburn Doubledays News Release
Tonight's Game: It's the second meeting of the year between the Aberdeen Ironbirds (Baltimore Orioles Affiliate) and Auburn Doubledays. Taylor Guilbeau makes his third start in a Doubledays uniform against Cristian Alvarado making his second with the Ironbirds.
Last Game: The Doubledays fell to the Aberdeen 10-0 in game one of the series last night. Auburn managed just four hits, three of which were singles and the other a double in the defeat. It marked the first time the Doubledays had been shutout this year. Auburn had previously shutout Batavia 10-0 and Vermont 2-0.
Dominating the Pickney: Aberdeen this season is an incredible 11-2 against the Pickney Division. The Ironbirds are 1-2 against the Crosscutters, 3-0 against the Spikes, 3-0 against the Scrappers, 3-0 against the Muckdogs, and 1-0 against the Doubledays. Aberdeen hasn't faced West Virginia. Last year, the Ironbirds went 8-9.
How Sweep It Is: Since 2010, the Doubledays and Ironbirds have swept each other more often than not. This is how the series has gone each of the past five years: 2010 Aberdeen swept Auburn 3-0, 2011 Auburn swept Aberdeen 3-0, 2012 Auburn swept Aberdeen 3-0, 2013 Aberdeen swept Auburn 0-2, and 2014 the two teams split a two-game series.
Another week, Another Award: Victor Robles was named New York-Penn League Player of the Week two days ago for the period from July 20th until July 26th. In those seven games, Robles's line: 7 G, .346 average, 2 HR, and 5 RBIs. It was the third week in a row a Doubleday was honored. Jefry Rodriguez was named Pitcher of the Week July 6th to July 12th and Rhett Wiseman was named Player of the Week July 13th to July 19th.
The Wrong Kind of Season Highs: The Doubledays pitching staff set the wrong kind of season highs last night in game one of the series. Jefry Rodriguez gave up the most hits any pitcher has surrendered with 12 last night. Rodriguez, John Feliz, and Connor Overton also gave up a combined 17 hits, which set a new high for most hits by an opposing team this season.
Family Connections: The Manager for the Aberdeen Ironbirds, Luis Pujols is the cousin of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim First Baseman Albert Pujols. Pujols served as the interim manager of the Detroit Tigers back in 2002 after Phil Garner was fired six games into the season. Detroit went 55-100 under Pujols that year, good for a winning percentage of .355, which is the lowest of any manager in Tigers history.
ACC (Blank) of the Year: In 2014, Ironbirds' outfielder DJ Stweart was named ACC Baseball Player of the Year helped lead Florida State University to a 41-14 record overall and 21-9 in ACC Play. He led the ACC with a .362 average and was tied for the most RBIs with 47. Stewart also ranked sixth in homers with seven and led the ACC with 19 doubles. In 2015, Doubledays' starting pitcher Matt Crownover was named ACC Baseball Pitcher of the Year after he finished with a 10-1 record in 14 starts for Clemson.
