Lowell Spinners News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PENN. - For the second consecutive night the Lowell Spinners and Williamsport Crosscutters turned Bowman Field into an amusement park. Wednesday night however it was the Spinners who got off the rollercoaster last, scoring three ninth inning runs, highlighted by Tate Matheny's two-run go-ahead single, to emerge with a 10-7 victory.
Williamsport (25-13) jumped out to an early first inning lead, taking advantage of an error to take a 1-0 lead. They would extend their lead in the second after a leadoff walk and Aneudis Peralta's second error of the game. A pair of run-scoring singles extended the CrossCutters lead to 3-0.
Lowell (19-19) exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead. Matheny got the inning started with a leadoff walk, coming around to score on a Williamsport error. With the bases loaded and one down, Peralta got a run back with an RBI single. Jhon Nunez followed with an RBI single of his own, but Hector Lorenzana was cut down at the plate for the inning's second out. After a walk to Luis Alexander Basabe re-loaded the bases, an Andrew Benintendi double plated two and Matheny followed with a two-out single of his own to give Lowell lead.
The Crosscutters would chip into the lead in the fifth, again taking advantage of a Lowell error, as the leadoff man reached on an error by Lorenzana. After an RBI double, Danny Zandona came in from the pen for Luis Ramos and a third Peralta error, this time a throwing error on an attempted sacrifice bunt, plated another run. A double play would plate a third and pull Williamsport within a run.
Williamsport pulled even in the sixth when Jesus Posso led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to tie the game at seven. The score would remain there until the ninth when Nunez led off the inning with a triple. After a walk to Basabe, who advanced to second on a groundout, Matheny took a two-strike offering into right field, plating both Lowell runners to give the Spinners a lead. Josh Ockimey added an insurance run with an RBI single of his own to give Lowell a 10-7 lead. Taylor Nunez would retire the Cutters in order in the bottom half of the inning to close out the win.
Matheny was the star of the night, going 2-for-4 with four RBI. Basabe meanwhile became the first Spinners player since Ryan Dent in 2008 to walk five times in a game, reaching by base-on-balls in each trip to the plate, adding a stolen base and two runs scored. Tucker Tubbs and Nunez also added two-hit nights.
Ramos allowed five Williamsport runs, two earned, on 11 hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out four. Zandona was charged with two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk, striking out one in three innings before Nunez (2-1, 1.37) picked up the win with two hitless innings of relief.
The Spinners go for the series win Thursday night when Jake Cosart (1-2, 6.23) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
