July 29, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA --- Jonnie Massad allowed just one infield single over six scoreless innings and combined with two relievers on a three-hit shutout on Wednesday night to lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 3-0 New York-Penn League victory over the State College Spikes at Medlar Field.
Massad retired the Spikes in order in the first inning before working around a two-out walk and error in the second. Craig Aikin led off the third with an infield single to second base for the only hit off Massad, who got out of the inning with a forceout and double play. The Spikes got another runner in the fourth on a one-out fielding error, but Massad (3-3) then retired the final eight batters he faced to finish his six innings with one hit, one walk and two strikeouts.
Reliever Derek DeYoung gave up a one-out single in the seventh before an inning-ending double play, then retired the first two in the eighth before a walk and error gave the Spikes two runners on base for just the second time in the game. DeYoung struckout Mike Pritchard to end the eighth and Ryan Gorton picked up his first save for Vermont with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning, allowing a two-out double before a game-ending groundout.
Vermont got the only run they would need in the second inning on a Steven Pallares one-out single and Skye Bolt RBI double for a 1-0 lead. Richie Martin led off the third with a double and scored an unearned run on a two-out throwing error by second baseman Josh Swirchak. Nick Collins followed with an RBI single to score Brett Siddall with another unearned run for a 3-0 lead.
Martin went 3-for-5 for Vermont, while seven of the other eight Lake Monsters had one hit in the game. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Vermont pitchers and the second in the last five games (1-0 win over Connecticut on July 24th). State College starter Dailyn Martinez (2-3) allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts over six innings to take the loss.
The Lake Monsters, who have won two straight games for just the third time this season, will look to complete the three-game sweep at State College on Thursday night at 7:05 pm before heading to Williamsport for a three-game series against the Crosscutters over the weekend. Vermont (16-21), which is now 8-8 on the road and 8-13 at home, return to Centennial Field on Monday to begin a six-game homestand against Staten Island and Brooklyn.
