Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

Both 11:05 a.m. games this season for Mahoning Valley (17-20) have gone to extra innings, and the Scrappers have been victorious in both. The Scrappers took the second game of a three game set against the Connecticut Tigers 4-3 in 10 innings at Dodd Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Mahoning Valley jumped out early thanks to a solo home run for Sam Haggerty to right. It was Haggerty's first home run of the season, and the first of his professional career.

The Tigers scored three in the bottom of the third. Cam Gibson tripled to right to score Tyler Servais, who reached earlier on a walk. AJ Simcox reached on a fielder's choice to score Gibson. Simcox later scored on a Tanner Donnels double to center that got over the head of Jodd Carter.

The Scrappers came back bit-by-bit. They scored one in the top of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Ka'ai Tom tripled and scored on a Mark Mathias single to left.

In the top of the 10th, Mark Mathias singled and scored on an RBI double for Carter. The ball went in and out of the glove of center fielder Joey Havrilak and allowed Mathias to score. It was all with two outs.

Jose Zapata (3-3) had the Tigers' winning run at third base with one out in the bottom of the 9th, but was able to shut the door. He came back for the 10th inning and stranded the tying Connecticut run at second base, and their winning run at third. Zapata walked four in two innings.

Kieran Lovegrove didn't earn a decision. He went three innings and gave up three earned runs, all coming in the third inning. He walked one and struck out one.

The Scrappers have won seven of their last nine, and on a three-game winning streak. Mathias extended his hit streak to 10 games with a single in the first inning.

Mahoning Valley goes for the sweep on Thursday night against the Tigers. First pitch is at 7:05. Leandro Linares takes the ball for the Scrappers.
