Mahoning Valley Steals Game Two of Series

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (18-19) fell to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (17-20) for the second straight day by a score of 4-3 in ten innings. After going 5-1 on the recent six game road trip the Tigers have dropped the opening two games of a six game home stand.

With the score tied at three the Tigers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on three walks from Scrappers reliever Jose Zapata (3-3). However, shortstop AJ Simcox grounded out to end the inning.

In the top of the tenth Mahoning Valley broke the tie. After pitching a perfect ninth Jake Shull (0-2) allowed a lead off single to second basemen Mark Mathais (3-4, RBI) who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs in the inning leftfielder Jodd Carter (2-5) flared a double to centerfielder and the eventual winning run came into score.

Mahoning Valley scored first against Connecticut starter Ryan Castellanos. In the third designated hitter Sam Haggerty led off the inning with a home run. For Haggerty it was his first homer of the season.

Connecticut answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Catcher Tyler Servais walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With one out designated hitter Cam Gibson (1-4) tripled to right scoring Servais and tying the score. After Gibson scored on an error it was shortstop AJ Simcox scoring on an RBI double by right fielder Tanner Donnels (2-5) making it 3-1.

Mahoning Valley now trailing 3-2 was able to tie the score in the seventh. With Nate Fury on the mound and one out leftfielder Ka'ai Toms tripled and scored when the next batter Mathais singled him home.

Castellanos went the first five innings allowing five hits and just one run. On the day Castellanos struck out one and walked two while also hitting two batters. Connecticut used four pitchers and all three relievers allowed at least one run.

Kieran Lovegrove started the game for the Scrappers going four innings and giving up three runs, two earned on five hits. He struck out one and walked one. On this day the Mahoning Valley bullpen was impressive. They used three pitchers out of the pen and didn't allow a run in six innings. The winning pitcher Zapata struggled in his two innings as he issued four walks and a hit but didn't surrender a run.

Connecticut will play the third game of the three game series against Mahoning Valley on Thursday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
