Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - The Doubledays beat the Ironbirds 8-5 behind Aberdeen's miscues and Auburn's bats.
The Doubledays took the lead in the first and never looked back. Dalton Dulin doubled with two outs and Ian Sagdal followed him up with a walk before madness ensued. Kelvin Gutierrez hit a grounder to short that should've been a double play. Instead, there were two errors on the Birds that led to Dulin scoring to give the Doubledays a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second and third, the Ironbirds tied it up in the fourth. DJ Stewart led off with a single and stole second. He then came around to score two batters later on an RBI single by Steve Laurino.
But in the bottom of the fourth, the Doubledays took back the lead. Gutierrez and Rhett Wiseman led off with back-to-back doubles to go up 2-1. Wiseman then scored on a single to left by Melvin Rodriguez as Auburn took a 3-1 lead.
The Doubledays got back on the board in the sixth with two more runs thanks to the following plays in order: walked, single, error, and single. The final run was when Jakson Reetz scored on an RBI off the bat of Diomedes Eusebio.
An inning later in the seventh, the Doubledays added another pair. Gutierrez reached on an error and later scored on a double by Melvin Rodriguez right before Reetz scored on a wild pitch. After seven, Auburn led 7-1.
In the eighth, both teams got on the board. Cedric Mullins reached on an error and later came around to score for the Ironbirds. The Doubledays responded when Dulin scored on Gutierrez's RBI single to center.
Mariano Rivera III worked out of the bullpen in the eighth and ninth and gave up three runs in the ninth before striking out DJ Stewart to end the game and give the Doubledays an 8-5 victory.
Auburn returns to Falcon Park tomorrow and sends Erick Fedde to the mound to face Jean Cosme for Aberdeen.
