Caruana Called Up To AHL Portland

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that forward Matt Caruana has been called up by the American Hockey League's Portland Pirates. This marks his second stint with the Pirates this season and fourth appearance in the AHL since making his pro debut with Portland at the end of the 2007-08 season.

The 24-year-old Orono, Ontario native appeared in 20 games with Portland, registering two goals and two assists with a +2 plus-minus rating and six penalty minutes earlier this season. In 20 games with the Gladiators, he has nine goals, seven assists and 20 penalty minutes. In all, Caruana has appeared in 84 games in the AHL between Portland and Iowa, scoring 7 goals and 9 assist and serving 16 penalty minutes.

Caruana made his professional debut with the Pirates, appearing in five games and registering one assist, at the end of the 2007-08 season, following his senior year at Niagara University, where he skated four collegiate seasons. Prior to skating at Niagara, the 6'0" 175-pound forward played three junior seasons with the Bowmanville Eagles of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League from 2001-2004.

The Gladiators continue their 7th season in the ECHL on Friday, February 5th vs. Toledo at 7:35 p.m. The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
