Everblades fall to Charlotte

Florida Everblades News Release

(Charlotte, NC) A controversial goal decided a very close game Friday night between the Charlotte Checkers and Florida Everblades at Time Warner Cable Arena. Charlotte got the break and the goal midway through the final period, and Florida dropped the second game of the two-game series 3-2.

Mike Taylor's goal with 12 minutes left in the third period proved to be the game winner. The loss spoiled another solid effort by Everblades' goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu, who finished with 36 saves and was the hard-luck loser. Charlotte goalie Ryan Munce came up big with several late-game saves to gain the win with 18 stops. The Checkers outshot Florida 39-20.

Ernie Hartleib and Ryan Lang scored for Florida, with Jean-Philipp Chabot, Aaron Slattengren, and Taylor scoring the Charlotte markers. The win saw the Checkers move ahead of the Everblades (24-18-2-4) and into second place by two points in the ECHL's Southern Division of the American Conference. The loss saw Florida's record fall to 4-4-1 in nine games against the Checkers (25-15-3-3) so far this season.

The Checkers had numerous chances to take the lead in the first period, but stellar goaltending by Beckford-Tsue kept the game scoreless after 20 minutes. Charlotte took advantage of four power-play opportunities to outshoot the Everblades 16-1 in the period, but frustrated the Checkers by keeping them off the scoreboard.

For the second straight night the Checkers broke a scoreless tie early in the second period. Chabot tipped in a Matt Schepke centering pass right on the doorstep at three minutes, 39 seconds for a 1-0 Charlotte advantage. Following Thursday night's script, Florida came right back to tie the game at 1-1. Hartleib waltzed into the Charlotte zone and snuck a shot by Munce just inside the left post, his eighth of the season.

The Everblades took their first lead of the game less than a minute later. Kevin Baker set up Lang for his eleventh of the campaign and a 2-1 Everblades advantage. Seconds after Carlson stepped back on the ice after serving a minor, Slattengren tied the contest at 2-2 at 13:42 off feeds from Andrew Carroll and Michel Leveille. The score remained tied at 2-2 at the end of the second period, as the Checkers had three power-play chances in the stanza to Florida's one.

Midway through the third period the controversial goal gave the Checkers a 3-2 lead. Taylor tapped the puck to the Everblades left post and Charlotte thought the puck dribbled by Beckford-Tseu. However, referee Nick Krebsbach waved the goal off but wanted to talk to his linesmen and goal judge to confirm his call. After a lengthy discussion, Krebsbach reversed his earlier call and awarded the Checkers and Taylor the goal.

The Everblades are off until Tuesday when they'll open up a two-game series against the Gwinnett Gladiators. Faceoff Tuesday and Wednesday at Germain Arena is 7:30 p.m.
