'Caps, Houston Finish off Scoreless Draw
July 21, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
SANDY, UT - In their second match of the week, Vancouver Whitecaps FC played to a tight 0-0 draw against Western Conference side Houston Dynamo FC on Tuesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
The 'Caps started the match brightly, testing the Dynamo backline with plenty of balls into the box.
Cristian Dájome had the best chance for the Blue and White 20 minutes in, as his Colombian compatriot Deiber Caicedo whipped in a perfect ball into his path off a corner kick, but the 'Caps' leading goalscorer couldn't direct his effort on target.
After the 'Caps early pressure, it was the Dynamo's turn to spring forward as Maximiliano Urruti blasted a curling free kick off the post, much to the relief of 'Caps goalkeeper Thomas Hasal.
Neither side could find the game's opening goal, meaning the teams would go into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
Both sides would come out of the halftime interval searching for the opener.
The 'Caps came closest to taking the leading in the 56th minute, with Cristian Gutiérrez almost curling in his first MLS goal off a free kick just outside the Dynamo penalty area.
Fast-forward to the 81st minute, Gutiérrez would get another free kick chance but this time opted to cross into the box for his teammates. Tosaint Ricketts, Andy Rose and Ranko Veselinovic all threw themselves towards the ball but couldn't force anything towards the Dynamo goal.
The Blue and White continued to press forward in the closing minutes but couldn't find the opening goal, claiming their fourth point of the week and their third clean sheet of the season.
They'll now switch their focus to this weekend's away clash against an in-form LAFC side at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT. You can catch the match live on TSN1/4 and AM730, with the radio pre-game show starting at 6:30 p.m. PT.
