Charlotte Checkers News Release
RALEIGH, NC - Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned forwards Derek Ryan and Sergey Tolchinsky to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL). The Checkers host the Texas Stars tonight and are currently holding one of the final playoff positions in the AHL's Western Conference.
Ryan, 29, made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes on March 1 at New Jersey, and has netted two goals in five games for Carolina this season. The Spokane, WA, native leads all Checkers skaters in goals (23) and points (53) in 66 games played, ranking tied for ninth in the AHL in scoring. In 2014-15, Ryan totaled 15 goals and 45 assists (60 points) in 55 games for Orebro of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), earning Forward of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors in the SHL. Prior to playing in Sweden, Ryan (5'10", 170 lbs.) spent three seasons in the Austrian league after completing a collegiate career at the University of Alberta. Ryan also played parts of four seasons with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League, the final two of which were under current Hurricanes Head Coach Bill Peters.
Tolchinsky, 21, made his NHL debut for the Hurricanes on Thursday night against the New York Rangers, earning his first NHL point with an assist on Justin Faulk's second-period goal. The Moscow native ranks fourth among Checkers skaters this season with 32 points (11g, 21a) in 65 games played. Tolchinsky (5'8", 170 lbs.) is in his first full professional season, after signing with the Hurricanes as an undrafted free agent on Aug. 22, 2013. Prior to turning professional, he totaled 237 points (87g, 150a) in 189 career Ontario Hockey League (OHL) games with Sault Ste. Marie. He has represented Russia in several international tournaments, including the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, where Russia won gold, the 2013 U18 World Junior Championship and the 2015 World Junior Championship, winning silver.
