
Trent Whitfield to be 20th Member of Portland Pirates Hall of Fame

Portland, ME - Portland Pirates Chief Operating Officer Brad Church announced today that former Portland Pirates captain and Assistant Coach Trent Whitfield has been chosen as the 2016 Inductee for the Portland Pirates Hall of Fame. Whitfield will be officially inducted as the 20th Member of the Portland Pirates Hall of Fame during a pre-game ceremony on Hall of Fame Night, Saturday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m. as the Pirates take on the Providence Bruins at Cross Insurance Arena.
Whitfield began his professional playing career with the Pirates in 1998 and played portions of the next seven seasons in Portland through 2005. The 38 year-old from Alameda, Saskatchewan ranks fourth in Portland Pirates history in games played (348), goals (102), assists (153), and points (255). Whitfield is the franchise record-holder for career shorthanded goals, scoring 10 over his time with the Pirates. He also held the franchise single season record for shorthanded goals until last week, when Wade Megan eclipsed his mark of five set during the 2002-03 season.
Whitfield was named the Pirates' Most Valuable Player in 2004-05. He was twice selected by his teammates as the Pirates' Players' Player in 1999-2000 and 2004-05. In 2002-03, Whitfield was selected as the Tom Ebright Award winner.
After his 16-year playing career, Whitfield returned to Portland to begin his coaching career as an Assistant Coach with the Pirates. He helped guide the team to a 39-28-7-2 record and a playoff berth.
Whitfield is now as an Assistant Coach with the Western Hockey League's Calgary Hitmen.
