Falcons Suffer 5-2 Loss to Comets

Utica, NY - The Springfield Falcons were unable to hold a lead in the third period and lost by a score of 5-2 to the Utica Comets on Friday night.

Domenic Monardo scored the only goal of the first frame at 9:29. His sixth of the year was scored after a faceoff win by Ross Mauermann in the offensive zone. Greg Carey fired a shot wide that Monardo collected from the end- boards and ripped a shot off Comets' netminder Joe Cannata and into the net. Springfield goalie Niklas Treutle stopped ten shots in the period.

The Falcons controlled the early stages of period two but found themselves shorthanded with a Steven Delisle tripping penalty. Just two seconds after the power play, the Comets tied the game at one with a goal from T.J. Hensick. His ninth of the year was scored at 8:22 with assists from Jon Landry and Alexandre Grenier. With 2:07 left in the second period, Ross Mauermann regained the Falcons lead with a wrist shot goal on a rush into the Comets zone. His sixth of the year was unassisted.

The Comets broke the game open with a four-goal third period. Alex Friesen scored his eleventh of the year just 3:39 into the stanza with a power play tally. Taylor Fedun and Grenier assisted on the goal to tie the game at two. Grenier registered the eventual game winning goal and gave the Comets their first lead of the night with a goal at 6:17. His 15th of the year was assisted by Curtis Valk and Landry. At 10:55, a David Shields slap shot gave the Comets a 4-2 lead. His third of the year was assisted by Travis Ehrhardt. 20 seconds later, Brandon Marino scored his second of the year to complete the game's scoring. Cole Cassels assisted on the goal to bring the game to a 5-2 score. Treutle was pulled following the goal in favor of Marek Langhamer. In just over eight minutes of relief, Langhamer made saved the only shot he faced.

Treutle took the loss with 30 saves moving his record to 11-17-5. Cannata made 18 stops to see his record move to 19-11-5.

The Falcons continue their season-long seven-game road trip with a 5 p.m. game in Albany against the Devils tomorrow night. The game can be heard on NewsRadio560 WHYN or viewed on AHL Live.
