New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The New Orleans Baby Cakes squandered a five-run lead in the eighth inning on Sunday afternoon, only to rally to beat the San Antonio Missions, 10-9 in 10 innings and snap a three-game losing skid.
Isan Diaz drove in three runs over the first two innings, including two on a home run in his second at-bat to give the 'Cakes a 4-1 cushion.
Mauricio Dubon drilled a two-run homer in the third to bring the Missions within a one, only for Deven Marrero to answer in the bottom half with a solo blast. New Orleans strung together a two-out rally an inning later, getting three consecutive RBI singles from JT Riddle, Austin Dean and Lewis Brinson to stretch the lead to 8-3.
Brinson paced the Baby Cakes' 14-hit attack with three hits, including a double.
'Cakes starter Dustin Beggs held San Antonio in check retiring 11 of the final 13 batters he faced, and Jeff Brigham came out of the bullpen to strike out both batters he faced as New Orleans carried its five-run advantage into the eighth.
The Missions sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring three runs off Brian Moran, who failed to retire a batter, and three more off R.J. Alvarez. Corey Ray, who had led off the game with a home run - his third in as many days - and later doubled, gave San Antonio a 9-8 lead with a run-scoring single.
Yadiel Rivera led off the bottom of the frame with an opposite-field home run to knot the score at 9-9, and the teams went to extra innings for the second time in six meetings.
Tommy Eveld used a double-play grounder to keep San Antonio off the board in the top of the 10th. The 'Cakes looked as though they were going to miss their scoring chance in the bottom half after Bryan Holaday struck out with the winning run at third for the second out, but a passed ball by catcher David Freitas allowed Marrero to race home with the winning run.
Eveld (1-3) did not allow a hit in his two innings of relief and picked up the victory, while Jay Jackson (1-1) took the loss for the Missions.
New Orleans and San Antonio face each other for the seventh consecutive day on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
