'Cakes Drop Third in a Row to San Antonio
May 11, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Corey Ray's three-run homer capped a four-run second inning for the San Antonio Missions, who defeated the New Orleans Baby Cakes, 5-3 on Saturday night.
The 'Cakes have lost three games in a row for the first time this season, and have dropped four of the first five to San Antonio during this eight-game stretch.
Monte Harrison got New Orleans off to a quick start, launching Jimmy Nelson's first pitch of the game 418 feet over the right field fence for his fifth home run. One batter later, Austin Dean went yard for his eighth of the year and third in as many days, giving the Baby Cakes a 2-0 edge.
Harrison finished with three hits, as did Dean, who is now hitting .392 on the year.
The Missions responded in the top of the second, plating their first run on a wild pitch by 'Cakes starter Josh Roeder, who was making his Triple-A debut. With two on, Ray took Roeder deep, giving him home runs in back-to-back games and the Missions a 4-2 lead.
Jacob Nottingham's solo homer in the fifth off Jordan Milbrath stretched San Antonio's edge to 5-2.
New Orleans got a run back in the sixth on an RBI double by Matt Snyder and had the bases loaded with one out, but Jake Petricka came out of the bullpen to strike out Yadiel Rivera and induce an inning-ending ground out from Bryan Holaday.
Alex Wilson worked around three hits over the final two innings to secure his second save and hand the victory to Nelson (1-0), who scattered three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Roeder (0-1) gave up four runs and seven hits across 3 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
The teams continue the four-game set at the Shrine on Sunday at 1 p.m.
