Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC - Before Bulls fans were treated to the post-game fireworks show, the Bulls' offense put on their own show in the seventh inning as they drove in eight runs, capped by a three-run home run from Joel Guzman, en route to an 11-2 win over Columbus on Friday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Richmond Braves (62-50) won, so the Bulls (61-52) still remain 1.5 games behind in the race for the South division title. The Buffalo Bisons (60-51) lost both-ends of a double-header to fall into a virtual tie with the Bulls, but the Rochester Red Wings won to take a half game lead in the Wild Card race.

The Bulls carried a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning and promptly loaded the bases with no outs. Jason Pridie started the scoring when he hit a grounder to Columbus first baseman Larry Broadway, who made a wild throw to home plate, allowing two runs to score. With one out, a fielding error by shortstop Melvin Dorta on a ball hit by Wes Bankston allowed two more runs to score, and Evan Longoria hit an RBI-single before Guzman's three-run home run gave the Bulls an 11-2 lead.

The Bulls led from the start as Jon Weber hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, Guzman hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, and Longoria's first career Triple-A hit drove in Brent Butler in the sixth inning. Columbus pulled within one in the top of the seventh inning when Brandon Watson drove in two runs with a triple, but the Bulls put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the inning.

Both starters factored in the decision as RHP Jae Kuk Ryu (3-3) worked five scoreless innings, surrendering just five hits and two walks while striking out three, and RHP Emiliano Fruto (3-8) allowed three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out six. Of the eight runs scored in the seventh inning, just one run was earned, charged to RHP Hector Carrasco.

The Bulls and Chiefs will meet again on Saturday evening at 5 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
