Indianapolis Indians News Release
RICHMOND, Va. -- First baseman Barbaro Canizares and shortstop Brent Lillibridge combined to go 9-for-10 with five doubles, five runs and six RBI as Richmond rolled to 9-2 victory over Indianapolis in front of 6,402 Friday night at The Diamond.
The Braves improve to 62-50 on the season and 29-25 at home, while the Indians fall to 57-56 overall and 25-31 on the road. Saturday will be the Tribe's 257th consecutive day with a record of .500 or better.
Canizares, who finished 5-for-5 with three doubles, three runs and three RBI, became just the second opponent to record five base knocks against Indians pitching this season. Lillibridge added a 4-for-5 effort with a pair of two baggers, two runs and three RBI. The duo's five extra-base hits also matched the most allowed by Tribe hurlers in 2007.
Richmond cracked the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the first. LF Brandon Jones led off with an infield single and RF Doug Clark followed with a free pass before Canizares brought both runners plateward on a double to center.
Indianapolis tallied a run in its second at-bat when RF Adam Boeve cracked his fourth Triple-A dinger of the season over the left field wall.
The Braves padded their lead with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. C Iker Franco highlighted the fifth with a two-run base knock to left and Canizares marked the sixth with an RBI double to left.
The Indians scored their second run in the eighth when 2B Luis Ordaz hammered his second long ball of the season to left, making it 7-2.
Richmond collected its final two runs in the bottom half of the eighth when Canizares and Lillibridge traded places with back-to-back doubles for the first run. 3B Wes Timmons pushed across his second run of the game with a single to center, scoring Lillibridge.
Braves RHP Jeff Bennett (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) earned his first win of the year in his fourth decision, while RHP Ryan Basner (4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 SO) worked the final four frames to pick up his first save.
Tribe RHP Marty McLeary (4.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 5 SO) suffered the loss, falling to 4-4.
Jones (2-for-4, 2 R), Timmons (2-for-3, 1 RBI) and Franco (2-for-5, 2 RBI) also recorded multi-hit efforts for Richmond, while Boeve (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Ordaz (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) were the only Indians to collect more than one hit.
Indianapolis opens a two-game series at Norfolk on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. RHP Luis Munoz is slated to start for the Indians, while RHP Andy Mitchell is expected to get the nod for the Tides.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m.
