Norfolk Tides News Release
August 3, 2007 - Louisville's Jay Bruce finished 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs driven in, powering the Bats to a 5-3 win over the Tides Friday night from Harbor Park.
Bruce, who was named the number two prospect in the Reds system by Baseball America prior to the season, slugged a long two-run home run in the 4th inning that gave the Bats a 3-0 lead. The 20-year-old outfielder also singled in the 6th inning, as he finished the four-game series hitting .438 (7-for-16) with three home runs and five RBI.
Mike Cervenak slugged his team-leading 13th home run of the season to lead the Tides' offense, while J.R. House added a single and two runs driven in. Cervenak (124 hits) and House (118 hits) rank second and third in the IL in hits, trailing former Tide Timo Perez, who has collected 135 hits for Toledo.
Alberto Castillo singled in the 7th inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Over that seven-game stretch, he has hit .360 (9-for-25) with a home run and six RBI, and he has also reached base safely in 13 straight contests.
Jon Leicester (1-3) took the loss for Norfolk, allowing three unearned runs on four hits in five innings of work. Leicester struck out three without walking a batter, but he also committed a crucial throwing error that led to three unearned runs in the 4th inning.
Daniel Guerrero (1-0) earned the win for the Bats, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings of his Triple-A debut. The 22-year-old, who was called up from Class-A Dayton, struck out two without walking a batter.
Marcus McBeth worked around a two-out walk in the 9th inning to register his seventh save of the season.
Norfolk dropped three of four with the Bats, their first series loss since the Tides lost three of four with Pawtucket to begin the month of June. Norfolk had won six and split six of their past 12 series.
The Tides continue their 10-game, nine-day homestand on Saturday night, as they welcome the Indianapolis Indians into town for a two-game set. Andy Mitchell (7-5, 3.45) is slated to take the hill for the Tides against Indianapolis right-hander Luis Munoz (1-1, 4.91), with first pitch from Harbor Park set for 7:15.
