Bulls Fall 8-1 Before Star Wars Night Sellout
April 27, 2024 - International League (IL)
Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - TJ Rumfield had three hits and two RBI, while Cody Poteet worked six solid frames to lead Scranton/Wilkes-Barre past the Durham Bulls 8-1 before sellout crowd of 9,435 on Star Wars Night at the DBAP on Saturday.
With the game scoreless in the fourth, Jeter Downs connected for a two-run home run off Bulls starter Jacob Waguespack. In the fifth, the first-place RailRiders (17-8) stitched a single and a pair of bunt singles to load the bases with none out. After a strikeout, Rumfield looped a shallow double over third baseman Junior Caminero to score two runs. Later in the inning, Jose Rojas pulled a double inside the first base bag to clear the bases loaded for a 7-0 Scranton lead.
Durham (9-17), which lost its fourth straight game, scored its only run in the sixth inning after a protest by Caminero in the batter's box. Jonny DeLuca was stationed at third base with two outs, when Caminero pointed to the mound objecting to a possible balk, which the umpires did not see. After a conference, the umpires ruled that a balk was indeed committed, permitting DeLuca to score.
Waguespack (L, 0-1) surrendered seven runs across 4 2/3 innings in taking the loss. Joe Rock threw four solid innings in long relief, permitting just one run.
DeLuca had two of Durham's seven hits, going 2-4 with a double.
Poteet (W, 2-0) notched his second straight win, tossing six innings of three-hit ball. The Bulls have been outscored 36-9 in the first five games of the series, claiming just one win.
The homestand concludes on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM ET with Taj Bradley making a rehab start for the Tampa Bay Rays against Yoendrys Gomez (0-0, 2.92).
