Peterborough Petes News Release
(Peterborough, ON, July 3, 2014)- The Peterborough Petes announced today that Assistant Coach Bryan Helmer has been named an Assistant Coach of the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears.
Helmer spent one season behind the Petes bench as an Assistant Coach, helping the team to a 32-30-0-6 record and a run to the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, assisting particularly with the defensive aspects of the game.
"This is a great opportunity for Bryan," noted Petes Head Coach Jody Hull. "Bryan is a good coach and an even better person. His positive influence on our players will be missed, and we wish him all the success in Hershey!"
Helmer played over 1,000 games in the American Hockey League and 146 games in the NHL. The defenceman served as Captain of the San Antonio Rampage between 2006 and 2008, the Hershey Bears between 2008 and 2010, and the Oklahoma City Barons in 2011/12. His jersey was retired by the OJHL's Wellington Dukes earlier this year.
Helmer still holds the AHL record for most career regular season points scored by a defenceman with 564. He has also played the third most AHL regular season games of all time with 1,117. He was named to AHL All-Star teams in 1997/98 and 2005/06, and earned the Fred T. Hunt Memorial Award and President's Award in 2010/11. He won the Calder Cup championship three times in his career (1994/95, 2008/09, 2009/10).
